Tattoo Size Guide: What Fits Where on the Body
Getting the size wrong is one of the most common tattoo regrets. Too small and the detail blurs; too big and the placement doesn’t work. Here’s how to match size to body part.
The Golden Rule
Detailed designs need more space to age well. The more detail in a design, the bigger it needs to be to remain readable in 10+ years.
By Body Part
Wrist
- Ideal: 1.5-3 inches
- Avoid: anything requiring fine detail (portraits, realism) — not enough canvas
- Best subjects: small symbols, names, simple lettering, geometric shapes
Forearm (outer and inner)
- Ideal: 4-12 inches
- Works: almost anything — see our forearm tattoo ideas
- Best subjects: sleeves (half or quarter), medium portraits, traditional flash, Japanese scenes
Upper Arm (outer/shoulder cap)
- Ideal: 4-8 inches
- Best subjects: traditional flash, smaller Japanese pieces, portraits
Upper Arm (inner bicep)
- Ideal: 3-6 inches
- Best subjects: script, smaller imagery, meaningful symbols
Chest (one pec)
- Ideal: 6-10 inches
- Best subjects: religious imagery, traditional flash, Japanese foo dogs, portraits
Full Chest
- Ideal: 12-16 inches wide
- Best subjects: large-scale symmetrical work, Japanese compositions
Back Piece
- Ideal: 14-24 inches
- Best subjects: Japanese dragons, koi with waves, phoenix, full scenes
Thigh
- Ideal: 6-14 inches
- Best subjects: almost anything — portraits, Japanese, florals, large-scale
Calf
- Ideal: 5-10 inches
- Best subjects: koi (upward-swimming), traditional flash, memorial pieces
Ribs
- Ideal: 6-12 inches
- Best subjects: script that flows, florals, abstract compositions
Ankle
- Ideal: 2-4 inches
- Subjects: small symbols, single words, small florals
Hands/Fingers
- Ideal: 1-3 inches
- Warning: fastest-fading placement (see touch-ups guide)
- Best subjects: bold simple symbols, block lettering
How to Visualize Size
When planning a tattoo:
- Print your design at actual size
- Tape it to the intended placement
- Live with it for a day — wear shirts, move around
- Ask if it feels right at that scale
Most people err on the side of too small. Larger tattoos age better and have more visual impact.
