Where you put a tattoo matters almost as much as what you get. Placement affects visibility, pain, healing, aging, and what clothes can cover it. Here’s a practical guide to body placement.
Always Visible
- Hands and fingers — even long sleeves don’t cover
- Neck and throat — visible in most clothing
- Face — the most visible of all
- Forearm — visible in short sleeves, but coverable
If your job requires a conservative appearance, the “always visible” spots require serious thought. The tattoo industry is evolving, but some workplaces haven’t caught up.
Hideable Under Normal Clothing
- Upper arm — covered by t-shirts
- Chest — covered by most shirts
- Back — covered unless backless
- Thighs — covered by most pants and longer shorts
- Ribs and stomach — covered unless the shirt is off
- Upper shoulders — covered by crew-neck shirts
Beach/Gym Visible
- Upper arms, shoulders
- Calves
- Ankles
- Upper back
If you want tattoos that show at the beach or gym but disappear at work, these are your target zones.
How Each Area Ages
- Forearms, outer arms: age well — reasonable friction, moderate sun
- Hands, fingers: age poorly — constant friction and sun
- Calves: age well
- Thighs: age well, large canvas
- Ribs: stretch and shift with weight changes
- Stomach: stretches significantly — pregnancy and weight changes matter
- Chest, back: typically age very well
Matching Design to Placement
- Sleeves — Japanese or American traditional with flowing composition
- Back pieces — Japanese (dragons, koi, foo dogs) or full detailed compositions
- Forearms — anything, but bold work reads best
- Ribs — scripts, florals, or larger compositions that wrap
- Chest — symmetrical work, bold traditional, script
- Calves — bold work, fills the shape well
