1. Match the Shop’s Specialty to Your Tattoo
Not every shop does every style well. A shop that excels at realism and black & grey may not do bold traditional work as well, and vice versa. Before you book, look at portfolios — not shop-wide Instagrams, but individual artist portfolios — and see if the style you want matches what they actually produce.
2. Portfolio Quality, Not Quantity
Scroll 40 images, not 4. A portfolio curated down to the best 10 pieces isn’t a real portfolio. You want to see consistency — does every piece they post look sharp, or are there obvious misses? Line quality matters. Saturation matters. How does the work look healed, not just fresh?
3. Sanitation and Licensing
Every legitimate tattoo shop in Florida must be licensed by the Florida Department of Health. You should see certifications displayed. Needles should be single-use, everything should be wrapped in plastic during your tattoo, and the artist should wear fresh gloves. If any of that’s missing, leave.
4. Consultations
