Your first tattoo is memorable — for better or worse. A little preparation goes a long way toward making sure it’s the good kind of memorable. Here are 10 practical tips from 25+ years of tattooing at Idle Hands Tattoo Co. in Jacksonville.
1. Pick the Artist, Not Just the Shop
Different artists in the same shop have completely different skill levels and specialties. Look at individual portfolios — not just a shop’s overall gallery. If you want a Japanese piece, pick a Japanese specialist. If you want American traditional, pick someone whose traditional work looks clean and bold.
2. Don’t Pick a Design From Pinterest
Pinterest references are useful, but don’t bring a single image and ask to copy it. First, it’s someone else’s art. Second, something designed for someone else’s body, skin, and style won’t look right on you. Bring reference themes and styles — let the artist create something custom.
3. Eat a Solid Meal Before Your Appointment
Tattooing drains blood sugar. A lightheaded client is a moving client, and a moving client gets a worse tattoo. Eat a real meal 1–2 hours before your appointment. Bring a snack and water for longer sessions.
4. Don’t Drink the Night Before
Alcohol thins the blood. A tattoo done on a hungover client bleeds more, holds less ink, and heals worse. Skip the drinks the night before.
5. Sleep Well
Sessions under 2 hours are fine on tired days. But a 4–6 hour session on no sleep? Brutal. Sleep well the night before — your pain tolerance and endurance depend on it.
6. Wear the Right Clothes
Plan for the placement. Getting a thigh piece? Wear loose shorts. Shoulder piece? Wear a tank top or something you don’t mind getting ink on. Rib piece? Bring a button-up. Don’t wear something you’d hate to ruin — ink does splatter.
7. Bring Entertainment
Longer sessions get boring. Headphones, a book, a podcast, or a movie on your phone all help. Just don’t move around a lot.
8. Know the Deposit System
Most serious shops take a deposit (usually $100–$200) to hold your appointment. This protects the artist from no-shows. The deposit comes off your final price. If you need to reschedule, give the shop notice — a few days at least.
9. Tipping Is Standard
In the U.S., tattoo tipping is standard — 15–20% on the final price is normal, 25% for exceptional work. Artists appreciate it, and it’s how you maintain a good relationship with someone who may work on you for years.
10. Plan for Aftercare Before You Arrive
Your tattoo starts healing the moment you leave the shop. Have aftercare supplies ready at home — gentle soap, fragrance-free lotion, clean paper towels. Our full aftercare guide walks through it day-by-day.
