- Half sleeve: shoulder to elbow, or elbow to wrist. ~15–25 hours.
- Full sleeve: shoulder to wrist. ~30–50 hours.
- Chest panel: one side of the chest. ~15–25 hours.
- Full chest: both pecs, possibly into shoulders. ~25–40 hours.
- Back piece: full back. ~40–60+ hours.
- Body suit: torso + arms + legs. ~150–300+ hours.
The Most Important Planning Decision: Style
Large-scale work demands stylistic cohesion. You can’t start a sleeve in neo-traditional and switch to Japanese halfway through. Decide upfront. The strongest large-scale traditions:
- Japanese — designed for sleeves, back pieces, and body suits. Wind bars, waves, and clouds link elements.
- American traditional — bold iconic pieces connected by filler
- Black and grey — realism or religious
- Neo-traditional — decorative, color-rich
Timeline: A Realistic Picture
A full sleeve typically takes:
- 1–2 months: consultation, concept, design iteration
- 6–12 months: active tattoo sessions
- 2–4 weeks between sessions for healing
- 1–2 touch-up sessions after finish
Back pieces: 12–18+ months total.
Body suits: 3–7 years.
