Cover-up tattoos are one of the most requested — and most misunderstood — services in the tattoo world. There’s real art to covering an old piece so the original disappears. But there are limits. Here’s an honest guide to what’s possible and what isn’t.

How Cover-Ups Actually Work

A cover-up isn’t just putting a new tattoo over an old one. Ink is permanent in the skin — you can’t erase it. What we’re doing is using darker ink and strategic design to make the old tattoo visually disappear under the new one.

This means the new tattoo almost always needs to be:

  • Larger than the original (often 30–50% bigger)
  • Darker — especially in areas covering the original ink
  • Strategically designed — elements placed to mask specific shapes

What Covers Well

  • Small faded tattoos — easiest category.
  • Light line work without solid fills — plenty of room to design over.
  • Old traditional tattoos with muted color — surprisingly coverable with Japanese or bold new traditional work.
  • Names or words — can be dissolved into florals, mandalas, or dark backgrounds.

What’s Hard to Cover

  • Solid black tattoos — there’s nowhere darker to go. Usually requires laser fading first.
  • Very dark or saturated color fills — same issue.
  • Large-scale old work — covering a full sleeve requires a full sleeve, which is a major commitment.
  • Finger/hand tattoos — limited canvas makes this very tricky.

When Laser Comes First

Sometimes the right move is laser tattoo removal to fade the original tattoo before covering. A few laser sessions can reduce the ink enough to open up cover-up options. This adds months (laser spacing is 6–8 weeks) but dramatically expands what’s possible.

What a Cover-Up Consultation Looks Like

At Idle Hands Tattoo Co., a cover-up consultation includes:

  • Looking at the old tattoo in person (photos aren’t always enough)
  • Discussing what you want the new piece to be
  • Honest feedback on what’s realistic
  • A plan — possibly including laser first
  • A pricing estimate

Cost

Cover-ups typically run 20–40% more than an equivalent fresh tattoo. The extra work, extra ink, and strategic design add hours. See our Jacksonville pricing guide for base ranges.
