Walk into a good tattoo shop and you’ll see two things on the wall: flash sheets full of pre-drawn designs, and portfolio photos of custom work. Both are legitimate — but they’re for different situations. Here’s which is right for you.
What Is Tattoo Flash?
Flash is pre-drawn tattoo designs. Traditionally, these were hand-painted sheets shops hung on the wall, and clients would pick one. Today flash is both digital and physical. Each design usually has a set price, and the artist can tattoo it as-is or make minor modifications.
What Is Custom Work?
Custom tattoos are designed specifically for you, usually based on reference images and consultation. The artist creates the design from scratch to match your concept, placement, and body.
Pros of Flash
- Faster — often same-day or next-day bookings
- Cheaper — pre-drawn means less artist time
- Lower commitment — great for first tattoos
- Artistically strong — good flash is well-composed and designed to work
- Walk-in friendly
Pros of Custom
- Unique to you — no one else has exactly this
- Sized and shaped for your body — placement, composition, proportions all tailored
- Usually bigger and more detailed
- Tells a specific story — your story
- Makes sense for meaningful pieces — memorials, sleeves, significant work
When to Pick Flash
- First tattoo and you want to test how it feels
- Small, iconic imagery (anchor, rose, swallow, Sailor Jerry-style)
- You love a flash piece exactly as designed
- You want something quick and bold
- Budget is limited
When to Pick Custom
- Memorial or deeply personal piece
- Larger work — sleeves, back pieces, thighs
- Specific concept with multiple elements
- You want something that fits your body
- Cover-ups (almost always custom)
A Middle Ground: Custom Flash
Many artists also create “custom flash” — original flash designs that are available to one client only. You get the relative speed and price of flash, but no one else has it. Ask if your artist does this.
At Idle Hands
Jeff does both flash and custom work. For larger Japanese pieces, traditional sleeves, or anything meaningful, custom is usually the call. For smaller iconic work, flash is often the smart, fast choice.
