Laser Tattoo Removal

How it works

Laser light breaks up tattoo pigment in the skin. Your immune system gradually carries away the broken particles. Multiple sessions needed.

Cost

Per session typically $150-$500 depending on size. Full removal typically requires 8-15 sessions.

Total cost: $1,500-$7,500+ for full removal of a medium tattoo.

Timeline

Sessions spaced 6-8 weeks apart. Full removal of a typical tattoo takes 1-3 years.

Pain

Described as a “rubber band snap” by most; more intense than getting the tattoo for some people. Pain manageable with numbing cream.

What it can achieve

• Full removal possible in many cases (not all)
• Some colors (green, blue) are hard to remove
• Dark ink removes easier than color
• Older, faded tattoos remove easier than fresh
• Some scarring possible (usually minor)
• Partial fading to enable a cover-up is often the goal, not full removal

How it works

Pain

Same as any tattoo — the existing ink doesn’t add pain, though the design might be larger than you’d otherwise get.

What it can achieve

• Old tattoo visually disappears under the new one
• New tattoo must be darker, often larger
• Design flexibility is limited by what can hide the original
• Can’t generally cover solid black tattoos without laser fading first

When to Choose Laser Removal

• You want the skin actually clean again (no new tattoo)
• The area can’t accommodate a larger tattoo
• The old tattoo is solid black or very dark
• You want flexibility about what (if anything) goes there next
• Your budget supports a multi-year process

When to Choose Cover-Up

• You want ink in that spot anyway (just better ink)
• The old tattoo isn’t so dark that cover-up is impossible
• You want the problem solved in months, not years
• Your budget supports a single larger tattoo
• You have a concrete idea for replacement work

The Hybrid Approach

Many clients do both: 2-4 laser sessions to fade the original, then a cover-up. This gives you:

• More design flexibility for the cover-up (since the original is lighter)
• Cheaper than full laser removal
• Faster than full laser removal
• Better-looking cover-up result

This is often the smart middle path. A good tattoo artist will tell you honestly if a cover-up needs pre-laser work.
